WER GEWINNT PRAG-BERLIN-WARSCHAU
H.Creutz/W.Lieber/FKV, East Germany, 1954

A game made in the former Eastern Germany, from François Cardinet's collection. Of course the Prag-Berlin-Warschau race is the Peace Race, also known as Friedensfahrt as you can see on the game's box. Incidentally, this box is rather small: it measures 29.5 x 22.5 x 2.5 cm.

The board measures 58 x 42 cm. The race follows exactly the twelve stages of the 1953 edition of the race, starting in Bratislava and ending in Warsaw.

The winner of the game is decided by a points classification. The first rider to reach the even stages receives 5 points, and the second receives 3 points. For odd stages, there are only 3 points awarded to the first rider to pass the city and one point for the second. Blue points are mountain passes; the first rider to cross each pass receives 3 points (none for the second). Red lines are sprints; players who fall on these play again. Red points with letters are race incidents (falls, punctures, injuries...). Players who fall on these get negative points or have to wait for some turns. The player with more points when all riders have reached Warsaw is the winner of the game.

In this copy of the game, there are ten counters in five different colours, as shown in the picture above. The rules mention six pawn-shaped counters ("halmasteine"), and they say that if there are more than three players, they may form teams. So far, so good. However the rules also mention team play using two counters of the same colour. Since I don't remember seeing any other copy of the game, I cannot be really sure, but I am afraid a team may be missing.

Furthermore, the rules mention 3 dice, while there are four included in this copy. The black dice are bigger than the red ones, so either one or the other colour is not original. It is obvious that this copy of the game has been "refilled" at some point.

Depart (from Bratislava). The USSR flag is prominent.

A peloton of wooden pawns. Of course, I would have preferred cyclist figurines, but these are ok.

Different moments of the race and all its difficulties.

Many authors for this game.
